Incredible backstories behind how (G)I-DLE members became one group

(G)I-DLE is having an amazing year in 2022, achieving the “Perfect All Kill ” with ‘Nxde’, following their success with ‘TOMBOY’!

I suppose it was possible thanks to the members who could truly bring their good songs to life.

(G)I-DLE members had various stories until they gathered as one group.

How were the members cast? And how did they end up getting together as one group? Let’s find out!

Soyeon, the beginning of ( G)I-DLE

(G)I-DLE’s reliable captain Soyeon actually had no intention to join CUBE.

In middle school, Soyeon was a street dancer briefly, and she was somewhat interested in being a dancer.

So she prepared to enter an art high school based on her dancing skills, but unluckily for her, she couldn’t get her music CD to play on the day of her dance exam, so she had to dance with no music and was eliminated in the end.

Soyeon was confident in her dancing skills, and her friends who took the exam that day all passed the exam already, So when Soyeon was the only one who failed the exam, she was so shocked that she considered quitting dancing.

But then, what caught her eye was a CUBE audition notice at her dance school.

To overcome the shock from failing to get into an art school, she auditioned for CUBE, which wasn’t a part of her plan, but she passed the audition!

So in 2014, when Soyeon was in her first year of high school, she became a CUBE trainee and started preparing to become an idol.

When she got on ‘Produce 101’ in 2016, she was already known among trainees as a #1 skilled trainee of CUBE.

After her sad elimination, she proved her rap skills on ‘Unpretty Rapstar’, and in late 2016, she signed an exclusive contract with CUBE and began to prepare her debut through ( G)I-DLE.

“Tons of money since birth” Minnie

Minnie was born in a wealthy family known as a HISO in Thailand, and she has been interested in music since her childhood.

When she was little, Kpop was already big in Thailand, and she was especially a big fan of Super Junior.

So she attended a vocal / dance school in Thailand, and that’s where she auditioned for CUBE and she passed the audition. But Minnie was in her last year of high school at the time.

She wanted to graduate and enter a university, so she was hesitant about going to Korea. But her parents strongly recommended that she first go to Korea, since this could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance. But it could be because of what a fortune-teller told Minnie’s parents about Minnie.

When Minnie was little, her parents went to a fortune-teller and they were told that if Minnie was far away from her home, she’d prosper. So, barely knowing any Korean, Minnie came to Korea and had a hard time.

The language problem was one thing, but because of the nature of the training, some of her fellow trainees disappeared time after time, so she ended up being more and more walled off.

That’s why Yuqi and Shuhua, who joined the training after Minnie, remember Minnie’s first impression as “a scary unnie”. But when she had teammates whom she could rely on after the debut group was decided, she was able to go back to her cheerful self.

Beijing’s prodigy Yuqi

Yuqi was also a very talented kid who actually didn’t need to come to Korea and go through so much hardship as a trainee.

Since she was little, Yuqi has had an outstanding brain and talent in academics.

She graduated from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School where only smart kids could enter, like a specialized high school in Korea. And in that school, Yuqi was a student in Class 1, which is considered the “Elite Class”.

Also, she entered a prestigious high school called Beijing 101 Middle School where only the students of the top 5% could enter.

Chinese President Xi Jinping as well as many high-ranking officials in China graduated from this school.

Yuqi did well in school, had a great personality, and was also pretty, so she was already a star in school.

She was actually more interested in dancing and singing than academics. She was talented in dancing too, so she grew interest in dancing as she learned a Chinese traditional dance called Dai.

Like Minnie, Yuqi liked Super Junior and dreamed about Kpop.

Since she was doing so well in school, her parents were against her dream of becoming a Kpop idol.

But after Yuqi persistently persuaded them,

she was finally able to become a trainee through CUBE’s Beijing audition in 2016.

What’s even more impressive is that during her tough life as a trainee in Korea,

she also studied her high school subjects and whenever there was an exam, she flew back to China and took the exam. And yet, she managed to graduate on time without ever having to repeat a year.

The really pretty girl Shuhua

Shuhua was raised in a strict family that didn’t even allow her to go to the movies. So she always watched tv and dreamed of being a celebrity who seemed to be living so freely.

Just like a main character of a drama, she attempted to run away from home and was caught in only 5 seconds, and even tried putting on makeup using her grandma’s makeup product. She was so mischievous, like she is now, and in middle school, she heard Kpop, which was big in Taiwan, and it got her interested in being a singer, as she hung out with her friends, dancing Kpop choreographies.

Because Shuhua was so interested in the entertainment world, she got into a famous art high school called Hwa Kang Arts School as a Theater student.

She chose Theater because all the Taiwanese stars she likes studied Theater, so she wanted to model herself on them.

At that rate, Shuhua would’ve become a star in Taiwan, but she too became a CUBE trainee out of coincidence.

Her friends at school had told her that they would go and audition for CUBE, so Shuhua got curious about the audition and followed them and ended up auditioning together.

After seeing Shuhua’s pretty visual, CUBE’s staff screamed out of joy and they accepted Shuhua right away after seeing her modern dance moves which she had learned at school.

But like Minnie, Shuhua was hesitant about going to Korea, which was a foreign land for her. It was because of her teacher’s advice on a different culture, a different language, and a slim chance of success.

But Shuhua thought she might regret it if she didn’t give it a shot just because there were many difficulties, so she got on a flight to Korea at a young age.

When Shuhua came to Korea, CUBE’s staff members were so happy apparently, saying “A really pretty kid has joined.”

But Shuhua cried a lot due to her tough time with the language barrier and the gap in skill levels between herself and Korean trainees, However, she was always the last one left in the practice room sharpening her skills, and as a result, she was able to be a part of ( G)I-DLE’s debut lineup.

Miyeon, the second CL

( G)I-DLE’s debut group was formed with Soyeon, Minnie, Yuqi, and Shuhua together! But the problem was that there weren’t enough Korean members.

So CUBE started looking around to add one Korean member in the group. Around this time, it was Miyeon who auditioned for CUBE on someone’s recommendation.

At the age of 21, which was a little late for a trainee, she got into CUBE and joined the debut line-up of (G)I-DLE.

But this was inevitable for a reason. Before joining CUBE, Miyeon used to be a trainee at YG.

She is known to have trained with BLACKPINK members. As a YG trainee, she was famous for her pretty face in YG trainees’ community.

At one point, she was incorrectly known as a rapper with the nickname “the 2nd CL” with a photo of someone else.

Miyeon was also a part of the debut line-up of PINK PUNK, which included BLACKPINK’s current members, but eventually, YG’s plan for PINK PUNK was cancelled, and Miyeon had to leave YG.

So she gave up her dream of becoming an idol and was looking for a new career, taking vocal lessons and MIDI lessons.

But CUBE had started looking for the last piece of (G)I-DLE then, and that last piece was filled by Miyeon.

Because Miyeon joined the debut line-up of (G)I-DLE late, Soyeon apparently helped Miyeon a lot as a leader so that Miyeon could fit in well.

Miyeon was hugely touched by Soyeon’s kind nature, so as soon as Miyeon joined (G)I-DLE, she became super talkative and revealed all of her personal history, which really caught Soyeon off guard. As you can see, (G)I-DLE members got together with various backgrounds and backstories!

Before getting together as the debut group, they had never been evaluated together, so they were actually worried if the group would be alright with the members’ personalities being so different.

But now, the members have become so indispensable that captain Soyeon bragged about them in the song ‘My Bag’ in the last album.

It seems that they have an even better harmony as a team because everyone has such different charms and personalities.

Since they went through a lot to get together and managed to debut, I hope they continue to bring joy to Kpop fans’ ears with captivating songs like ‘TOMBOY’ and ‘Nxde’.
