For more than seven years, TWICE has been one of the most popular Kpop groups. But with great popularity came countless rumours. Whenever there was any weird rumour about TWICE, it was blown out of proportion and brought pain to TWICE and their fans. So based on the reports we received, we fact-checked some of the rumours about TWICE.
Let’s find out the rumours and the real truths behind those rumours.
TWICE Nayeon’s Instagram followers manipulated?
There was a rumour that TWICE’s Nayeon rigged the number of her Instagram followers through hacking.
Around then, someone uploaded a post saying that many people’s accounts started following Nayeon, though they never chose to follow her.
This started a rumour that Nayeon seemed to have rigged the number of her followers through a hacking company.
Plus, the video that spread this rumour stated that on June 1, the day it happened, many people’s accounts were deleted after receiving a message from Instagram that an abnormal activity had been detected,
which grew the suspicion. Also, the video that spread this rumour tried to grow this rumor bigger by saying that an influencer with about 230k followers was seriously affected by this.
But there was one fact that this rumour video didn’t reveal on purpose. It’s that the people whose accounts were deleted were using the same names as TWICE members.
A post titled “Victims of Insta account deletion related to TWICE Nayeon” was posted, and the writer claimed that the testimonies of the victims were collected. And it was stated that the victims had the same names as TWICE members and that their acquaintances’ accounts suddenly started following Nayeon when they didn’t mean to.
At first, they suspected that a specific company had hacked many accounts because this was such an absurd situation. But this turned out to be an error on Instagram.
Instagram has been automatically deleting imposters’ accounts since before this rumour.
In fact, global star Cardi B originally went by the name Bacardi B, which was the name of her Instagram account, but she said her account kept getting deleted, so she named herself Cardi B.
All TWICE members opened their Instagram accounts in May of this year. As a result, on June 1, Instagram considered people with the same names as TWICE members as imposters and deleted their accounts. Fortunately, Instagram realized its error and recovered all the deleted accounts.
In case people misunderstand TWICE because of this post, TWICE’s fans provided a lot of help, sending questions to Instagram on their own.
Also, the person who had uploaded a post and claimed to be a victim
later wrote “I don’t think it was Nayeon’s fault”. I think it was Instagram’s error.” but I guess the person who made the rumour video pays no attention to a post like that.
The free ticket rumour about TWICE’s US tour
During their world tour, TWICE attracted 100k people at seven shows in 5 US cities. But behind this success, there was a rumour that JYP had passed out free tickets.
To back up this argument, the video that spread this rumor showed tweets where people are saying they got free tickets to TWICE’s concert. and started a rumour that JYP achieved full-house concerts by passing out free tickets for TWICE’s world tour. But it turned out that this wasn’t true.
First, the social media account that collects all the data about concert sales and ticket sales around the world stated that TWICE’s world tour was the most successful concert tour by female Asian acts in the US and that TWICE holds the entire top 4 highest-grossing concerts by female groups in the US with their world tour concerts.
If JYP had passed out free tickets, this sale number could’ve never happened. Also, one unfortunate fact shows that there couldn’t have been free tickets. It’s the price of the resale tickets for TWICE’s world tour.
Tickets for all the concerts of TWICE’s world tour were sold out extremely fast, and many resellers bought a lot of tickets too.
Tickets for TWICE’s world tour were priced at about 80,000 won to 270,000 won, depending on the seats.
But resellers sold tickets for about 2.7 million won to about 13 million won
Seeing how the seats in the audience were all filled, it seems that fans bought tickets for TWICE’s concerts despite the crazy prices of the resale tickets.
It looks like JYP should come up with a plan to deal with resellers.
Meanwhile, there were people on social media who were giving away free tickets because they sadly couldn’t make it to the shows.
It seems that those who got tickets from strangers are those who got tickets from the people who couldn’t make it to the shows.
I don’t understand why some people make a rumour about passing out free tickets and degrade the status of Kpop, instead of being proud of the fact that Kpop idols are so loved all the way in the US.
TWICE isn’t popular?
Recently, there has been a rumour about TWICE’s popularity as well. because on Korea’s streaming site Melon, TWICE’s recent song ‘Talk That Talk’ entered the chart in the 70s at the time of TWICE’s comeback.
But TWICE’s song consistently climbed up the chart, just as any good song always does, and was ranked #31 as of Sept 7 at 10pm. And as of Sept 7, it was ranked #10 on both the daily chart and weekly chart of Spotify.
In addition, TWICE’s new album [Between 1&2] sold half a million copies in the first week of its release. With that, TWICE reached a new career high.
You can feel TWICE’s popularity even more from their rankings outside Korea. TWICE was ranked #3 on Billboard 200 and #1 on Billboard Artist 100, which showed their popularity in the US.
TWICE’s world tour early this year also showed TWICE’s increasing popularity around the world.
This year, TWICE became the first girl group ever to hold a stadium concert in North America.
It was a stadium that can house about 25,000 people, but when the tickets went on sale, there were over 50,000 people who logged in at the same time to get tickets.
This is known to be the highest number of people logging in simultaneously for any girl group’s US concert in history.
So TWICE decided to add one more date for a stadium concert.
TWICE’s popularity in Japan remained unchanged as well. TWICE held a total of 3 concerts at Tokyo Dome this year.
The venue could house about 50,000 people, but TWICE’s concerts were sold out 3 times in a row!
TWICE member’s outfit
Despite this popularity, the video that spread absurd rumours claimed that TWICE members wear revealing outfits due to their decreased popularity. But this was not true.
The rumour video showed a photo of only the upper body of Jihyo, but in the full body shot version of this photo, her outfit isn’t too revealing.
Also, the photo of Momo simply looks like she is wearing a lingerie, but it’s actually not a revealing outfit at all.
And all of TWICE’s YouTube content has created a lot of buzzes and gained many views.
Perhaps the fact that there are still many rumours created about TWICE proves that they are very popular.
Besides the rumours mentioned so far, there are so many other rumours about TWICE.
The rumour that Jihyo is a victim of Jung Joon-young’s video scandal turned out to be false when the reporter who reported this scandal said that Jihyo is unrelated.
As for the rumour regarding Sana’s post about the end of the Heisei Era, historians and culture experts defended her, saying that it’s nothing to criticize.
Meanwhile, Jeongyeon gained weight during a break after her neck surgery.
Though many people already knew that it was a temporary weight gain due to steroids’ side effects, malicious commenters attempted to make a rumour that she may be pregnant.
Throughout their career of 7 years, TWICE has suffered from countless rumours.
Now, they’ve become strong enough to not be shaken by rumours.
In ‘My Alcohol Diary’, Nayeon said that when she had just debuted, she used to worry about rumours a little, and she wanted to say they aren’t true, but she said that that is totally meaningless now and that it doesn’t matter if she has confidence in herself.
She said people actually put in a lot of work to create such rumours and that it doesn’t hurt her feelings, but she said it doesn’t feel nice to see her fans being hurt by those rumours.
I hope that TWICE and TWICE’s fans focus on TWICE’s cool and joyful performances and have even more pleasant times, instead of worrying about rumours created with malicious intentions.
This has been our in-depth look into many rumours that TWICE and ONCEs have suffered.
